Why electrolysis deserves more recognition: Supporting transgender clients & those with PCOS

Unwanted hair growth is a common concern among women, but for individuals with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and transgender individuals, the experience can be especially distressing - particularly when it appears in areas typically associated with male-pattern growth.

This can have a significant impact on self-esteem and overall well-being, making the demand for long-term hair removal solutions even more urgent.

Electrolysis continues to stand out as a powerful option.

Unlike laser hair removal, which is not always permanent and may not be suitable for all skin types or hair colours, electrolysis is effective on every hair type and tone - and it remains the only method for permanent hair removal.

Despite its advantages, electrolysis is less commonly offered in clinics compared to laser, which is often favoured for treating larger areas quickly.

Yet, electrolysis works by delivering tiny electrical currents directly into each follicle, destroying its ability to regrow hair.

Over time, this results in no further upkeep, offering a truly permanent solution.

For those who are affirming their gender identity or managing hormonal conditions like PCOS, this level of effectiveness can be life-changing - but many still aren’t aware it exists.

Electrolysis vs laser hair removal for hormonal hair growth: The key differences

The fundamental distinction lies in how each method targets the follicle.

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light to target pigment within the hair, which works best on people with light skin and dark hair.

Electrolysis, by contrast, uses a fine probe to deliver an electrical current directly into the follicle, destroying it at the root - regardless of hair or skin colour.

There are three types of electrolysis methods:

  • Galvanic: A chemical reaction disables the follicle
  • Thermolysis: Uses heat to destroy follicle tissues
  • Blend: Combines both techniques for a more comprehensive effect

The most suitable method depends on several factors, including the client’s skin sensitivity, hair type, the treatment area and how the hair has responded to past sessions.

Electrolysis can be performed virtually anywhere on the body - commonly on the face, underarms, and legs - and is especially effective on areas where precision is essential, such as the chin, jawline, and upper lip, where hormonal hair tends to be more visible.

Long-term benefits outweigh the time commitment

While laser is often seen as more convenient due to its speed, especially for large areas, the longer-term benefits of electrolysis make it a smarter investment for many.

This is especially true for those experiencing persistent regrowth due to hormonal fluctuations, such as those caused by PCOS or transitioning.

Electrolysis typically requires 10–12 sessions to achieve complete and lasting results.

This is due to the hair growth cycle, as only follicles in the anagen phase (active growth) can be treated effectively.

Sessions are initially spaced 1–2 weeks apart, then extended to every 4–6 weeks as hair growth diminishes.

Once the course is complete, most individuals experience permanent results, with only occasional touch-ups needed if hormonal activity stimulates new growth.

Laser treatments, while faster, often require regular maintenance sessions every 6–12 months—especially if underlying hormonal issues remain.

What to expect after treatment

Following electrolysis, it's common for clients to experience small, pinpoint blood scabs, especially in early sessions. These typically heal within 7–21 days.

To support healing, clients should apply witch hazel or aloe vera immediately after treatment using clean cotton wool and continue with aloe vera for 2–3 days to reduce redness and lower infection risk.

Clients must avoid picking at scabs and should wear SPF30_ daily, avoiding direct sun exposure to prevent post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Laser treatments, on the other hand, may feel like a quick sting or snap, with aftereffects such as mild redness or swelling.

Electrolysis can be more intense due to the precision and nature of the procedure, but it offers a more permanent solution in return.

In summary

Electrolysis deserves more visibility and appreciation - particularly among clients with PCOS or those undergoing gender transition - because of its ability to deliver truly permanent results across all skin and hair types.

Though it requires a greater time investment up front, its unmatched precision and effectiveness can offer relief from the emotional burden of unwanted hair, replacing distress with confidence and long-term peace of mind.
